As part of its commitment to providing educational resources, encouraging community service, and promoting awareness, A+E Networks is involved in several initiatives designed to make lasting contributions on national, state, and local levels.
A&E: THE RECOVERY PROJECT
Inspired by the extraordinary response to our series Intervention, A&E created The Recovery Project to break the stigma of addiction and raise awareness that addiction is a treatable disease and that recovery is possible. Through The Recovery Project, A&E works with non-profit organizations, government officials, and cable affiliates nationwide to give communities tools and resources related to addiction and recovery. Each year, we organize Intervention Town Hall meetings with our cable affiliates, bringing together community members, treatment specialists, and law enforcement representatives to talk about addiction issues and what can be done to solve them.
HISTORY AND A&E CLASSROOM
A+E Networks is committed to reinvesting in our national community through education. Our educators and historians develop educational materials that build students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The Idea Book for Educators is our biannual teacher's magazine mailed to 250,000 teachers nationwide free of charge, featuring teacher’s guides for programs that air during our commercial-free classroom time slots, information about our classroom initiatives, and links to our partner organizations. The A&E, History®, and Bio Channel Classroom websites are also a valuable resource for teachers to access classroom guides, watch streaming video or find our more about our student and educator contests. Learn more by visiting us online at History Classroom or A&E Classroom
TAKE A VETERAN TO SCHOOL DAY/THANK A VETERAN AT WORK
History® developed the Take A Veteran to School Day program to connect our veterans with schools nationwide, to hear their stories and to thank them for their years of service. As part of this initiative, History provides free materials including lesson plans, how-to guides, and streaming video resources. Building off the success of this program, we created the Thank A Veteran at Work campaign which encourages corporations and organizations to thank veterans in the workplace for their service, past and present. These two programs are the cornerstones of our corporate commitment to veterans and each year we continue to build our veterans outreach efforts. Log on to www.veterans.com to learn how to get involved.
BIO CLASSROOM AND BIOGRAPHY PROJECT FOR SCHOOLS
The BIO Classroom website is an interactive resource with free educational materials designed to encourage the use of biography in the classroom. We feature a "Bio of the Month" lesson plan based on programs aired during the commercial-free BIO Classroom hour, which airs on Tuesdays at 7am/6c. Bio also works with the U.S. Conference of Mayors on the Biography Project for Schools which provides teachers with a colorful Emmy Award-winning educational manual, "BIO: Experience It!." BIO Classroom has online content and other tips to help educators incorporate the study of important individuals into their classrooms and encourage students to explore the lives of those who have made an impact on our world. HISTORY EN ESPAÑOL: CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE
As the only member of the Cable in the Classroom organization to provide free Spanish language teaching materials, History en Español takes its commitment to education and the Latino community very seriously. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, History en Español features lesson plans and biographies of significant Latino leaders and events from throughout history. Each issue of A+E Network's Idea Book for Educators features a special Spanish-language History en Español lesson plan for the classroom.
LIFETIME PUBLIC AFFAIRS
Through its award-winning public affairs initiatives, Lifetime raises awareness about a wide range of issues affecting women and their families. Lifetime’s multi-year advocacy campaigns include public service announcements, legislative advocacy and partnerships with non-profit organizations. In connection with the popular series Army Wives, Lifetime's public affairs group works with grassroots organizations representing military families nationwide. Other key Lifetime public affairs campaigns include Remarkable Women, Stop Breast Cancer for Life and Don't Skip a Beat.
SAVE OUR HISTORY
History® works to advance history education and preservation with its Save Our History (SOH) program. SOH provides grants to preservation organizations and historical societies, working with young people to preserve their local history. In addition, SOH provides useful materials including an educator's manual, how-to guides, lesson plans, and volunteer guidelines. This program helps preserve and publicize vital aspects of our nation's history while connecting schools, organizations, and cable affiliates to their local heritage. Visit us online here to learn more.
VISUALIZING HISTORY
History® creates short-form videos which help bring the past to life in our nation's most valuable museums and public sites. With the guidance of curatorial staff and historians, these pieces about a variety of significant events and places are in many of the nation's most prestigious sites and institutions, including the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, the Gettysburg National Monument Park, Ellis Island, Pearl Harbor, and dozens of other locations nationwide.
