| As part of its commitment to providing educational resources, encouraging community service, and promoting awareness, A&E Television Networks is involved in several initiatives designed to make lasting contributions on national, state, and local levels. |
A&E: INTERVENTION TOWN HALL MEETINGS
As part of its Lives That Make a Difference initiative, A&E raises awareness on issues related to addiction through its series of town hall meetings. Inspired by the television series Intervention, these special events bring together experts, business and community leaders, and others interested in the subject matter to talk about social problems, such as drug abuse, and what can be done to solve them. These thought-provoking meetings were developed through an alliance between A&E, Partnership for a Drug-Free America, local cable companies, government officials, and drug abuse councils. |
A&E AND HISTORY CLASSROOM
A&E Television Networks is committed to reinvesting in our national community through education. Our Emmy-Award winning staff of educators and historians is dedicated to developing educational materials that build students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The Idea Book for Educators is the biannual teacher's magazine mailed to 220,000 teachers nationwide free of charge. The Idea Book includes Teacher's Guides for programs featured during our commercial-free "Classroom" time slot and the Classroom Calendar, which includes air dates, program information, and copyright guidelines. The A&E, History®, and Bio Channel Classroom websites are also a valuable resource for teachers to access teacher's guides, watch streaming video or find our more about our student and educator contests. TAKE A VETERAN TO SCHOOL DAY
History® developed the Take A Veteran to School Day program together with our cable partners to connect our veterans with schools nationwide, to hear their stories and to thank them for their years of service. As part of this initiative, History provides free materials including lesson plans, how-to guides, and streaming video resources. Building off the success of this program, the Thank A Veteran at Work campaign encourages corporations and organizations to thank veterans in the workplace for their commitment to service, past and present. BIO CLASSROOM AND BIOGRAPHY PROJECT FOR SCHOOLS
The Bio Classroom website is an interactive resource with free educational materials designed to encourage the use of biography in the classroom. We feature a “Bio of the Month” lesson plan based on programs aired during the commercial-free Bio Classroom hour, which airs M-F at 7am/6c. Bio also works with the U.S. Conference of Mayors on the Biography Project for Schools which provides teachers with a colorful educational manual and other tools to help them incorporate the study of important individuals into their classrooms and to help students explore the lives of those who have made an impact on our world. Visit Biography Classroom for more information. |
HISTORY EN ESPAÑOL: CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE
As the only member of the Cable in the Classroom organization to provide free Spanish language teaching materials, History en español takes its commitment to education and the Latino community very seriously. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, History en español features lesson plans and biographies of significant Latino leaders and events from throughout history. Each issue of AETN’s Idea Book for Educators features a special Spanish-language History en español lesson plan for the classroom. |
CITIZENSHIP QUIZ
Each year, more than 700,000 individuals become U.S. citizens. Along the path to citizenship, all applicants must pass a test in U.S. history and civics. History® challenges all Americans to know the answers to this test, and to build their knowledge of our nation’s history through a fun and engaging program called The Citizenship Quiz. Log on to Citizenship Quiz to practice the test, play games, watch related video clips, and more. |
SAVE OUR HISTORY
History® works to advance history education and preservation with its Save Our History (SOH) program. SOH provides grants to preservation organizations and historical societies, working with young people to preserve their local history. In addition, SOH provides useful materials including an educator's manual, how-to guides, lesson plans, and volunteer guidelines. This program helps preserve and publicize vital aspects of our nation’s history while connecting schools, organizations, and cable affiliates to their local heritage.
